PARI
Hypersonics
Lab
Applied research that meets a national need for advancing critical hypersonic technology
OVERVIEW
The PARI Hypersonics Lab focuses on applied research that meets a national need for advancing critical hypersonic technology. The lab aims to reduce the time it takes to move and transition a technology from the initial design phase to the defense and commercial markets.
The lab’s primary goals include:
Innovation
Propelling innovation in advanced manufacturing techniques, modeling and simulation and testing (thermo-mechanical, environmental, high-speed propulsion, aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic)
Education
Training the next generation of the hypersonics workforce through hands-on experience with all stages of the design, manufacturing and testing process
Partnership
Bolstering collaboration with industry and government stakeholders by providing spaces to design and test novel technologies
Facilities/Capabilities
The PARI Hypersonics Lab is located in the 65,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Hypersonics and Applied Research Facility (HARF). HARF is an intentionally designed facility that can support classified research and protect sensitive intellectual property while enabling a flexible space for multiple stakeholder use. HARF brings together designing, joining, manufacturing and testing under one roof.
HARF houses the following equipment and facilities:
Hypersonics Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center (HAMTC)
A single location at Purdue for industry partners to work on materials and manufacturing innovations. HAMTC provides access to testing capabilities at Purdue that reduce the time and cost of prototype development, provide innovations through academic engagement, and transition hypersonic technologies to the defense industrial base.
The Boeing/AFOSR Mach-6 Quiet Tunnel
Currently the only operational quiet tunnel in the United States. Low-disturbance (quiet) hypersonic tunnels are critical to assess aerothermodynamic heating, control-surface effectiveness, and other flow physics affected by freestream noise levels. More info here.
HYPULSE Reflection Shock/Expansion Tunnel
A high-enthalpy hypersonic tunnel that recreates the high-temperature, chemically active air flows that are characteristic of real hypersonic flight. HYPULSE is capable of producing hot flows from Mach 4 to Mach 25+.
